Heather Smith, Ph.D., has been providing counseling to children, adults, couples, and families for over 25 years. Dr. Smith received her undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Tennessee. She then obtained her Master’s in Counseling from Clemson University, followed by her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Connecticut.
Dr. Smith is a member of the American Psychological Association, and has previously held state offices with the American Counseling Association. Dr. Smith is licensed as a Professional Counselor in the states of Connecticut and Virginia.
In addition to providing therapy, Dr. Smith enjoys teaching. She has taught multiple classes and seminars for college students, parents, and professionals on a variety of topics around the country on topics such as:
- Managing depression and anxiety
- Anger management
- Parenting education
- Stress management
- Personality disorders
- Human development
- Crisis intervention / Incident debriefing
- Counseling and Diagnostic skills
Dr. Smith’s writing includes multiple curriculums for training professions in working with individuals who have both substance abuse and psychiatric diagnoses. She also developed a workbook entitled Creativity and Stress. Her recent work, a pamphlet entitled Keep It Moving, is a great self-help approach to moving your life forward. It guides you through simple steps and recommends specific journaling that help you get unstuck. Keep It Moving is designed for self-help groups or as an adjunct in individual therapy.
Dr. Smith’s enthusiasm for working with individuals as a therapist and as a mediator for conflict resolution is clearly evident in her passion for helping others deal with life’s challenges.
